Côtes de Bourg is a controlled appellation of origin created in 1936 for red wines and in 1945 for dry white wines. The Cotes de Bourg derive their character and power from a rich and diverse terroir. This features a predominantly clay and limestone soil, but also gravel and sand near Pugnac. The hilltop part of the appellation, consisting of  red silt from the Quaternary Period, is ideal for Merlot.
